A Canadian employer is required to apply for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) before they hire a foreign worker. The LMIA is a report issued by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) which outlines the impact or lack of it that hiring a foreign worker would have on Canada’s labour market.

A  positive LMIA will show that there is a need for a foreign worker  to fill that specific job, as there is no Canadian worker available to do that job.
